About the Survey

This page provides results from the 2023 Canadian Digital Health Survey with trending of selected questions from previous years' surveys where data is available. These annually conducted surveys are based on a variety of utilization and attitudinal tracking metrics regarding digital health services in Canada. The surveys provide actionable insights to help advance the digital health landscape in Canada.

Survey Topics

This survey collects data on the access to and use of digital health services, along with the factors influencing access and utilization pattern. It has a range of patients-reported experience questions aimed at knowing about patients’ perspectives of their experience with connected health and coordination of care. In addition, several socio-demographic, economic, racial, geographic, and health status descriptors are collected by the survey.
  • Digital Health Uptake
    This section offers insights into the digital health landscape in terms of interest in, use of and unmet demand for digitally enabled health services. It explores a variety of digital health services that includes access to personal health information (PHI), e-booking with a health provider online, virtual visit with a health provider, and consultation with a chatbot for healthcare concerns.
  • Access to Personal Health Information
    This section explores how Canadians are accessing their electronic PHI, the platforms they use to access their personal health records (provincial portals vs. other portals), and the types of health records they can access. It also examines Canadians’ experiences with and perceptions about the platforms used to access their PHI.
  • Virtual Care Services
    This section provides insights into the uptake of virtual care services, notably videoconference, secure messaging, and phone consults. It also delves into Canadians’ experience with virtual care services.
  • Access to Electronic Prescriptions
    This section investigates prescribing-related behaviours. It highlights Canadians’ use of electronic prescriptions, their preferences for obtaining and filing prescriptions along with their experiences.
  • Connected Health and Coordination of Care
    This section explores Canadians’ experiences with gaps in connected health and coordination of care. It also delves into their perceptions about the impacts of gaps in coordination of care and clinical communication on their personal health.
  • Innovative Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    This section highlights Canadians’ comfort levels with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative technologies in healthcare. It also investigates their concerns with the use of AI in health care.
  • Digital Health Literacy
    Digital health literacy tends to be an important driver of the uptake of digital health services. This section presents Canadians’ digital health literacy scores calculated from the eHEALS assessment tool.
  • Access to Health Records as Caregiver
    This section highlights Canadians’ experience with accessing health records online as a caregiver.
  • Respondent Profile
    This section includes age, gender, geography and other variables describing the study sample.
